ABOT Case Openers

The ABOT case opener grew out of a desire to make cutting open cardboard boxes faster, safer and with reduced product damage. With nearly 10 years of development, ABOT is in its 3rd generation, and utilizes a dimensioning system to allow for random sized cases, then a SCARA robot to provide extremely precise cuts (.01 inch), saving both operator injuries and inadvertent cutting of product.

ABOT ONE has a single infeed and discharge and a maximum throughput of approximately 600 cases per hour with a 3-sided cut. ABOT DUO uses a second tunnel to allow the robot to turn and stay busy while the 2nd case is being positioned; it is capable of 1100 cases per hour.

ABOT ONE typically provides 2-year simple payback on direct labor alone for operations cutting 1,500 or more boxes per day. Often the safety considerations (carpal tunnel, blade cuts) or product damage reductions are additive to the labor savings. The parser-merger provides direction and sortation of products to better leverage the ABOT DUO’s capabilities. Case rates are on the order of 20 to 30 per minute through the parser-merger, and about 16 per minute through the ABOT DUO.

Footprint is relatively tight at a length of 137 in. and a width (ABOT ONE) of only 66 in., allowing layout flexibility. The unique cutting head allows for automatic blade changing to reduce maintenance time. The round head allows for an interference cut, allowing ABOT to accommodate boxes that are out-of-square or otherwise imperfect. ABOT is easy to operate and can be run as part of an automated system or a stand alone device. Remote 24/7 support is included with the machine.

Multiple types of cuts are possible. The PC based controller can accommodate nearly limitless recipes which can be triggered manually or based on box size groupings, or even bar code identification.
